Why Authentic Licensed Cards Matter

Ritika Suri once bought a ‘rare’ card online only to discover the card stock felt thin, the colours were slightly off, and it failed a basic light test used by collectors to spot fakes. Official TCG cards are printed under strict licensing agreements with the game’s publisher, using controlled cardstock, printing techniques, and holofoil processes — none of which counterfeiters can fully replicate.

Faizan Qureshi, a Delhi-based TCG trader, explains that licensed trading cards go through quality checks that ensure consistent centring, sharp print detail, and accurate colour saturation, while unofficial prints often show blurry text, incorrect fonts, or mismatched card backs. Buying authentic TCG cards also protects the integrity of competitive play, since most official tournaments explicitly ban proxy or counterfeit cards.

There’s a collector-value angle too — Mumbai-based Yashvi Thakkar notes that original TCG cards hold real resale and trade value within the community, while fakes are effectively worthless and often unwelcome at trade meets. To buy safely, stick to authorised card shops, check holofoil patterns and card weight, and be cautious of unusually cheap ‘rare’ listings.
